It’s that time of the year again – as we start to snowball into Christmas, many people are left wondering, how can I overcome overwhelm in this busy period?
With the never-ending demands of work, family/social and personal obligations stacked on your shoulders and weighing you down, it’s easy to fall into a pattern of feeling unable to cope.
It’s like it never stops, right?
You’re either running around constantly putting out fires or hyper-vigilant because the people-pleaser in you is in overdrive as you need to make sure everyone is happy and gets along.
Sounds exhausting thinking about it, doesn’t it?
If you want to
- avoid turning into a frazzled hot mess this holiday period
- become super organised, overcome overwhelm and
- create a sense of peace, calm and harmony within as well as all around you
here are my top 5 tips to help keep you clear-headed, grounded and high-vibe in the lead-up to Christmas.
1- Listen to Your Body
Your body is the most amazingly constructed machinery in the entire world.
It can tell you exactly what you need to know at any given time.
The problem is, that not all of us know how to listen to what it’s trying to say.
When you experience symptoms of stress, be it
- Physical – eg. headaches, pain, skin or gut issues etc
- Mental – eg, trouble sleeping, forgetfulness or problems concentrating, trouble with decision-making or stress about what’s coming up, or
- Emotional – eg. anxiety, irritability, feelings of hopelessness, there is only ever two reasons why.
One, you’re out of balance energetically or two, you’re spiritually out of alignment with yourself.
Both result in your body communicating to you that it’s not OK and functioning at optimal levels.
So take notice, tune in and trust what your body is telling you so you can overcome overwhelm before it hits you hard.
2- Focus on What Makes YOU Happy
Once you’ve tuned in and noticed that something’s not right, it’s time to decide to take action and remedy the situation before it balloons out of control.
Time out for yourself is critical if you want to have your batteries fully charged.
We all know you can’t pour from an empty cup so make this a non-negotiable.
The best way to connect back in energetically and spiritually is to do things that LIGHT YOU UP.
For example, being creative, spending in nature, partaking in your favourite hobbies or sporting activities…
Spend time nourishing your Soul and you will have much more energy to show up as your best self.
3- It’s OK to Say ‘No’
Over-committing to others, feeling stretched like a rubber band and about to snap?
It’s time to exercise what I like to call your “NO” muscle.
Learning to say ‘no’ and setting boundaries for yourself is an integral part of managing your time and energy.
As a recovering people pleaser, I appreciate how difficult it can be to say ‘no’ to people because you don’t want to let them down.
But at the end of the day, if you’re not showing up 100% as your best self, that won’t do anyone any favours.
Give yourself permission to tune in and ask yourself, “Is this aligned with me and what I want to do?”
If the answer is no, it’s ok.
Know that you’re allowed to say ‘no’.
4- K.I.S.S.
This is one of my favourite acronyms.
K.I.S.S. stands for – Keep it simple, sunshine!
Overwhelm happens when we try to focus on too many things at once.
So let’s keep it simple, sunshine.
If you’re struggling to keep up with everything try this simple 3-step process called The S.E.E. System.
- Step 1: SORT – do a brain dump of everything you need to know to get it out of your head
- Step 2: EVALUATE – create two columns and separate what you wrote into: Column 1: Things I need to do vs Column 2: Things the Universe can look after.
- Step 3: EXECUTE – look at column 1 and prioritise what you need to do. Pick ONE THING – either, the most urgent or my personal preference, the MOST FUN thing, and do it.
If it still feels like too much and you want to overcome overwhelm, try breaking it down into smaller bite-sized steps again by repeating the process for the task.
Once you get on a roll, it’s easy to tick things off this list.
PS – You can forget about what’s written in column 2 – the Universe is on it already. Done! 🙂
5- Have Fun
Life is meant to be enjoyed – so the more you focus on having fun and doing what lights you up, the more energy you’ll have.
And… funny enough, when you are in the vibration of joy and happiness, that’s what you will attract more of.
If you’ve been stuck in overwhelm and/or you know that this time of year gets stressful, I can help.
As an energy healer, kinesiologist and coach, one of the biggest reasons I’ve discovered when observing people who are in overwhelm, is that they are more in their head than their heart. They’ve lost that connection with themselves and their Inner Being.
When you become more aligned with yourself and who you are – that’s when all the stress falls away.
Because when you’re in alignment, you’re not focusing on what could go wrong.
So instead of procrastinating, worrying or being stuck in the middle of situations that cause even more stress, you can relax and enjoy the lead-up to Christmas and spend time in the company of your loved ones with ease and joy.
